Does Your Dog Resource Guard?

Let's help them feel more safe
Growling over their food bowl?

Guarding toys, stolen items or their favourite resting place?

Resource guarding can leave you feeling worried about how to safely manage everyday situations — but it can be worked on with the right support.

Why do Dogs Resource Guard?

Resource guarding is a normal behaviour that can help dogs protect things they consider valuable. However, it can become problematic or unsafe when a dog feels the need to guard resources from people or other animals.

What is Resource Guarding?

Resource guarding occurs when a dog uses behaviour to prevent another person or animal from approaching or taking something they value. Resources might include food, chews, toys, stolen items, resting places or even access to a particular person.

Signs of Resource Guarding

  • Freezing when a human or dog approaches

  • Running away with the item

  • Hiding the item

  • Standing over the item

  • Growling, snapping or biting to prevent the item being touched or taken away

Why Does Resource Guarding Happen?

Your dog may be afraid of losing the item, particularly if they have had it taken from them or if they have been punished for lower-level guarding previously.

What Should I Do Next?

The first step to getting support is to get in touch via the contact form or book a discovery call, we can then discuss what's going on with your dog and have a friendly chat about how we would work together. I'll then provide you with the appropriate steps to get started.
